Why a time-of-use tariff can save you money

Time-of-use tariffs charge different prices at different times of day — a cheap window overnight, a higher rate at peak. If you can shift some of your usage (charging an EV, running a heat pump, a battery, or just the dishwasher) into the cheap hours, the right tariff can cut your bill without changing anything else about your home.

But the cheapest headline rate isn't always the cheapest overall — standing charges, the length of the cheap window and how much you can actually shift all matter. The checker compares today's tariffs against how you really use electricity, so you see the best deal for you, not a generic table.

Common questions

What is a time-of-use tariff?

A tariff where the unit price changes through the day — usually a cheap overnight window and a more expensive peak. If you can move some usage into the cheap hours, you pay less for the same energy.

Do I need to give my address or an EPC?

No. The tariff checker only needs your postcode (for regional rates) plus your usage and devices. There’s no house survey — you can add your address later if you want a full Home Energy Plan.

Is it free?

Yes. The checker is free and shows your result on screen. We may earn a commission if you switch through one of our links, which never affects the ranking — tariffs are ordered by your saving, never by commission.

What’s the difference between the checker and the full Home Energy Plan?

The checker is just the tariff comparison — quick, no address needed. The full Home Energy Plan adds your home’s EPC to cover insulation, heating, grants and upgrade recommendations. You can start with the checker and upgrade in one tap.
